Varnish

“Varnish blows your mind off…” so said a famous luthier.
Topic of great interest which has always nourished legends, research, studies and debates.
Thanks to analysis carried out with the most modern sophisticated technologies, it has been possible to establish, with a high degree of accuracy, the diverse components of the old Cremonese varnishes. Luckily enough, these discoveries, reveal the “what” but not the “how”. So, on this matter, there will still be plenty of space for conventions, publications and so on.
Every luthier, following his personal taste, expertise and free will, is therefore faced with the challenge of concocting grounds which exalt color, gloss, wood texture and of wrapping such grounds into the thinnest, most elastic, most transparent film ever, possibly recreating the magical color shades of the three century old Cremonese masters.
